  6. Please take the time to review this file before installing and
  7. running WorldTime 2.1 in a network environment.

  10. WORLDTIME OPERATING MODES
  11. -------------------------
  12. When WorldTime is run without any command line parameters, the
  13. program defaults to "Normal Mode."
  14.  
  15. Normal Mode is the recommended operating mode for most users,
  16. and offers the most reliable performance whether the program
  17. is being run on an individual PC or in a network environment.
  18.  
  19. In Normal Mode, the WorldTime 2.1 initialization file
  20. (WTIME21.INI) is automatically stored in the host PC's default
  21. Microsoft Windows directory (e.g., C:\WINDOWS).
  22.  
  23. Normal Mode is specifically recommended when WorldTime is used
  24. on local area networks, since operation in this mode makes
  25. locating and accessing the WTIME21.INI file very easy.
  26.  
  27. Normal Mode limits ALL instances of WorldTime on the user's
  28. system to a single initialization file.  As a result, users
  29. will NOT be able to install and run multiple copies of
  30. WorldTime and run each with different configuration settings.
  31.  
  32. A second operating mode, "Private Mode," is available
  33. for the benefit of users who prefer to access the WTIME21.INI
  34. file from WorldTime's own directory (e.g., wherever the
  35. WTIME21.EXE file is located), not the default Windows
  36. directory.

  38. To run WorldTime in Private Mode, the /P command line switch
  39. should be included in the WorldTime command line, as in the
  40. following example:
  41.  
  42. C:\WTIME\WTIME21.EXE /P
  43.  
  44. When run in Private Mode, multiple copies of WorldTime
  45. (located in separate directories) can be run concurrently,
  46. each one accessing its own set of configuration settings
  47. stored in a separate WTIME21.INI file.
  48.  
  49. Copies of WorldTime installed and used in a local area
  50. network (LAN) environment generally should NOT be run in
  51. Private Mode, since this can complicate management of the
  52. individual WTIME21.INI files (See Network Considerations
  53. below).

  55. The user can always check the operating mode of a currently
  56. running instance of WorldTime by opening the "About WorldTime"
  57. dialog box.

  60. WORLDTIME SUPPORT FILE PROTOCOL
  61. -------------------------------
  62. WorldTime 2.1 includes a number of modifications to improve its
  63. handling of initialization (.INI) and help (.HLP) files.
  64.  
  65. WorldTime automatically compiles a complete
  66. drive\directory\filename path for each WorldTime support file.
  67. Each path is stored in memory while WorldTime is running, and
  68. used by the program whenever access to a support file is
  69. required.
  70.  
  71. The paths of the WTIME21.INI and WTIME21.HLP files are assigned
  72. according to the following protocol:
  73.  
  74. a) In Standard/Single-Instance Mode, the WTIME21.INI file is
  75. created and maintained in the default Windows directory
  76. (e.g., C:\WINDOWS) of the local user's PC.  WorldTime 2.1
  77. obtains the drive\directory path of the Windows directory
  78. directly from Windows itself, and assigns the INI pathname
  79. accordingly.

  81. b) The WTIME21.INI file is not included on the master program
  82. disk.  This file is automatically created by WorldTime 2.1
  83. when the program is first run.
  84.  
  85. c) The WTIME21.INI file is ONLY stored and accessed from the
  86. default Windows directory when the program is run in
  87. Standard/Single-Instance Mode.  If WorldTime is run with the
  88. Multiple-Instance Mode command line switch (/M), the program
  89. will store and access the WTIME21.INI file from the
  90. WorldTime default directory (i.e., the directory containing
  91. the WTIME21.EXE file).

  93. d) The WTIME21.HLP pathname is based on the drive\directory
  94. location of the WorldTime executable file, WTIME21.EXE.  As a
  95. result, WTIME21.HLP MUST be located in the same directory as
  96. the WTIME21.EXE file.

  98. WorldTime's default support file routines will automatically
  99. override any paths passed to the program via any "Working
  100. Directory" entries.
